Why Soak Your Nuts?
So after your initial chuckle, I’m sure many of you are wondering why in the world I called my book Soak Your Nuts. The idea to do this actually came to me in a meditation-so you may say it was divine intervention! The title is a humorous play on words and serves many purposes. First and foremost, I bet it grabbed your attention. When I first started a business over 25 years ago there was hardly anyone teaching detox and promoting raw foods-those of us living this lifestyle were truly on the fringe. These days detox is a buzz word in Hollywood and a common topic in the media, it was important to me to stand out (those Skinny Bitch ladies had the right idea!). Now that the title has caught your attention and piqued your curiosity enough to pick up the book, I hope you will find that this is not just another fad diet but a time-tested method of cleansing and renewal for your body, mind and spirit.
From a practical standpoint, soaking your nuts has an actual application in raw foods preparation. Nuts naturally have enzyme inhibitors that prevent them from sprouting prematurely. By soaking your nuts in water for a few hours you break down the enzyme inhibitor and begin the sprouting process making them easier to digest and absorb nutrients from. An added bonus of soaking nuts is by increasing nutrient absorption you are satisfied more quickly and likely to eat less-plowing through a bag of nuts in one sitting and worrying that you’ll pack on the pounds for it will become a thing of the past! This process applies to seeds, grains and legumes as well.
Of course I used the title to grab attention but I also want to remind people to keep a sense of humor during this process. Humor has been the key to my success in many ways. I’m asking people to do things they may have never heard of or thought they’d be capable of-laughter definitely helps ease the tension! If we take ourselves too seriously the process can become burdensome when it should be a joyful journey. The symptoms of cleansing can be uncomfortable but keeping a positive attitude and sense of humor has helped me get through some of the roughest times and come out better than ever on the other side.
